When an older dog starts leaking urine while it sleeps, the bed is often the first thing to suffer. Foam that soaks up urine cannot really be cleaned, and a damp bed is bad for your dog's skin too. Wet bedding can cause urine scald, a painful rash on the belly and hind legs (PDSA). You need a bed that still supports aching joints but keeps liquid out of the foam and is quick to strip and wash.
This guide is research-based; we have not tested these beds. Specs come from manufacturer and retailer pages we read in November 2026, listed under Sources.
Key takeaways
- "Water-resistant" is not "waterproof." A water-resistant cover only slows liquid. What protects the foam is a waterproof inner liner around the foam itself.
- Best setup: solid foam + waterproof liner + washable outer cover + a spare cover, plus washable pads on top.
- Pick a low, flat bed. Incontinent seniors are often arthritic too.
- Clean fast: strip the wet cover, wipe the liner, dry your dog's skin.
- Incontinence has treatable causes. See your vet first.

How to choose a waterproof orthopedic bed

Three kinds of "waterproof"
- Water-resistant outer cover. The fabric is treated or coated, so a spill beads for a while. Urine left overnight will usually soak through. It is useful as a first barrier, but not enough alone.
- Waterproof inner liner. A zip-up encasement around the foam, under the outer cover. This is the layer that actually keeps the foam clean. Look for one that encloses the foam on all sides, not just the top.
- Vinyl-backed or sealed construction. Some beds, such as K&H's Superior Orthopedic, use a vinyl backing. Fully sealed beds wipe clean but feel less soft. Seams and zips are where liquid gets in, so wipe them carefully.
Foam thickness and density
Incontinence and arthritis often come together in senior dogs, so the bed still has to support. As a rule of thumb: 3–4 in of solid foam for small dogs, 4 in for medium, and 6–7 in for large dogs. Dogbed4less is one of the few brands that publishes foam density (3.2 lb). Without a number, look for a written warranty against flattening.
Memory foam vs egg-crate
Egg-crate foam's peaks trap moisture and flatten quickly. Solid foam inside a liner is easier to keep clean and supports better.
Low entry and bolsters
Choose a flat bed or one with a low, open front. A dog that has to clamber in is more likely to leak while repositioning. Bolsters are fine if the front is open, but they are another fabric part to wash. PetFusion's bolsters sit in the cover, so they wash with it.
Sizing by weight and length
Measure your dog lying stretched out, nose to base of tail, and add 8–12 in. A bed that is too small pushes your dog to the edge, where liquid runs off the liner onto the floor. For heavy dogs see our large-dog orthopedic beds guide.
Spare covers and pads
The routine that works: a washable absorbent pad on top, the outer cover under it, the waterproof liner around the foam, and a spare outer cover ready for a quick swap. VCA suggests pee pads on bedding for older dogs who leak while lying down (VCA).
A cleaning routine that protects skin and foam
- Remove the wet pad and cover promptly. Don't leave your dog lying on damp fabric.
- Wipe and dry your dog's belly, hind legs and genital area. Ask your vet about a barrier cream if the skin looks red.
- Wipe the liner with a damp cloth and mild soap, and let it dry before re-covering.
- Wash the cover following the label. Enzyme laundry products help with urine odor.
- Put on the spare cover and a fresh pad.
- Once a week, unzip the liner and check the foam for damp or smell. If it has absorbed urine, it is time for new foam.
The beds
Dogbed4less Gel Memory Foam
The maker describes a single solid 4 in gel memory foam pad (3.2 lb density) inside a waterproof internal zip cover, with a machine-washable outer cover. Amazon listings add a bonus second outer cover, which is useful when one is in the wash. Seven sizes run from 35x20 to 55x47 in. Only the inner liner is waterproof, as the maker notes, so keep pads on top.

Dogbed4less Orthopedic Gel Memory Foam Dog Bed
4 in single solid gel-infused memory foam pad, 3.2 lb density; waterproof internal zip liner plus washable external cover (Amazon listings add a bonus second cover); 7 sizes from 35x20 to 55x47 in
Pros
- Stated foam density published (3.2 lb), which few brands do
- Liner plus a spare cover suits frequent washing
- Flat, low mattress is easy to step onto; large sizes available
Cons
- No bolster
- 4 in may be thin for the heaviest giant breeds
- Only the inner liner is waterproof, not the outer cover
PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed & Lounge
PetFusion pairs solid CertiPUR-US memory foam with a waterproof inner liner and a water-resistant, machine-washable outer cover. It describes the cover as slowing absorption before liquid reaches the liner. The bolsters on three sides are pre-loaded in the cover. Foam depth: Small 2.5 in, Large and XL 4 in, Jumbo 6 in. Warranty wording varies by listing, so check before buying.

Make the rest of the home easier
Dogs that leak often also slip on hard floors on the way outside. Our hardwood floor guide covers rugs and grips. For more beds, see the best orthopedic dog beds for senior dogs with arthritis or browse orthopedic beds. If your dog has started using the sofa less, a ramp or stairs helps too.
A dog that leaks urine often also struggles to get on and off its bed; see low-entry dog beds for arthritic dogs. And put a washable non-slip runner rug beside the bed so the first step off is not onto bare floor.
FAQ
What is the best waterproof orthopedic dog bed for an incontinent senior?
One with solid foam inside a fully enclosing waterproof liner, a washable outer cover, and ideally a spare cover. Dogbed4less and PetFusion both include liners.
Is a water-resistant dog bed enough for incontinence?
Usually not on its own. Water-resistant fabric slows liquid; a waterproof liner around the foam is what protects it.
Can I wash the memory foam?
Generally no. Manufacturers make the covers washable, not the foam, which is why the liner matters.
How do I stop urine scald on my dog?
Change wet bedding quickly, keep the skin clean and dry, and talk to your vet about treating the incontinence and protecting the skin.
